Myth-Direction: Guilds of Ravnica

We've had all of the set reviews from Guilds of Ravnica, now it's time for Guilds of Ravnica Myth-Direction! Today, we're going to take a look at all of the Mythic Rares from Guilds of Ravnica and discuss whether they should be a Mythic Rare or not.

Arclight Phoenix
I don’t think Arclight Phoenix deserves to be a Mythic Rare. The three instants and sorceries you have to cast to trigger Arclight Phoenix is a big enough hoop to jump through and as a Mythic Rare I feel it could have been pushed further, maybe even two instants and sorceries. Beyond that, a four mana 3/2 Flyer is fine but even then it feels like maybe up the cost to include double red and maybe up the power to push the power level up a tiny bit.

Aurelia, Exemplar of Justice
This is the kind of power level I think of when I see a Mythic Rare. Aurelia is a fantastic mid-game creature that provides you with so much board advantage even if you have only one other creature, even without another creature Aurelia can still target herself with her own ability to give you a brilliant attacking threat while still brick walking most Flying attackers. You want to get the most use out of her Mentor ability but that’s not the be all end all by any means, Aurelia is a great Mythic creature that’s sure to see constructed play thanks to her obviously pushed power level.

Chance for Glory
Hmm, I’m not sure Chance for Glory should have this Mythic status as it’s not particularly splashy. It’s a good way of getting around an opposing alpha strike but you will have to put in a lot of work to win on your next turn and I don’t think the indestructible to all of your creatures warrants you losing the game, maybe if it had another effect like damage or making additional token creatures but at three mana that would be too good. For those effects you’re probably looking at at least four mana, however for what the card is I could see Chance for Glory being a two mana instant with the same drawback.

Divine Visitation
It has no immediate impact but if left unchecked Divine Visitation runs away with a game, however even with the power this five mana enchantment can produce I don’t think it should be a Mythic Rare. The impact is a bit underwhelming unless you can take advantage of it straight away and start churning out 4/4 Angels which sets this card way back. Divine Visitation would’ve probably been fine as a Rare, I imagine it’s a Mythic to stop limited being taken over by Divine Visitation seeing as enchantments are typically harder to deal with.

Doom Whisperer

As I said in my set review this card is bonkers, nuts, insane, feel free to just keep adding adjectives if that’s not enough for you. There is no drawback and Doom Whisperer has an immediate impact, granted to have more than two life, if it’s not dealt with the body will ruin combat for your opponent and take chunks out of their life total when it’s unblocked. This is a slam dunk Mythic Rare for sure.

Dream Eater
I actually think Dream Eater is a very well designed card. The mana cost is reasonable for Surveil 4, Boomerang and a 4/3 Flying body, it’s not impossible to deal with and because of that it needed an immediate impact. Because of the pushed nature Dream Eater hits the Mythic mark for me, it has been limited a little, having to target a permanent an opponent controls so you can’t do any tricksy things on your side of the table but Dream Eater is good enough to be played in constructed and will run limited tables.

Impervious Greatwurm
This is the Buy-a-Box promo but that doesn’t mean it escapes scrutiny. The only reason Impervious Greatwurm is a Mythic Rare is because of how big it is, I like the 16/16 body and the Indestructible is gravy.  Being able to power the Greatwurm out with Convoke early is going to be pretty nuts but in the whole I don’t think it should’ve been a Mythic Rare, the size impacts the rarity a bit but a 16/16 Indestructible Rare Buy-a-Box promo would be about as good.

Lazav, the Multifarious
I love the flavour of Lazav and I really like the potential of the ability. Lazav is powerful and versatile and, above all for a Mythic Rare, probably needs to be dealt with quickly. It’s the type of card that if let loose will dominate a limited game and will make your opponent’s life hell.

March of the Multitudes
There are a couple of reasons March of the Multitudes is a Mythic Rare: the instant speed, the huge board swing and the general power level of this card, which is immense by the way, and finally the flavour theme of all coming together and banding as one unit. Maybe March could’ve just been a Rare but then you run the risk of having it pop up a lot in limited and making games really un-fun as you will always be on edge that a your opponent could just Convoke this out of nowhere. I love this card and definitely think the polished power level justifies the Mythic status.

Mnemonic Betrayal
My mind started boggling when I saw Mnemonic Betrayal, this could well be a fair, fixed Yawgmoth’s Will just getting you value from your opponent’s graveyard. The mana cost keeps Mnemonic Betrayal in check a bit and doesn’t let mono black decks or black splashing decks get away with murder by being able to play it. I think there could be some great, weird things you could do with Mnemonic Betrayal and the power level puts it up there on the Mythic Rare scale for sure.

Nullhide Ferox
Yes. Yes to all of this. I don’t think I can see a way to Nullhide Ferox not being classed as a Mythic Rare: the power level is way up there, it puts a clock on your opponent early and is very hard to deal with. Having to pay an extra two mana to actually be able to target the Ferox at all is a subtly big thing and even when you can target it the removal spell has to be good to deal with Nullhide Ferox. It will see play, it will be effective and it will need to be dealt with sharpish. Mythic Rare for sure.

Ral, Izzet Viceroy
The way Ral, Izzet Viceroy is structured is quite interesting. His first ability gives you card selection and helps fuel any graveyard shenanigans you might have and not to mention any Jump-Start spells. His second ability is a good, if a bit temperamental, removal ability and his ultimate looks a bit win-more to me but I can foresee situations where you might need it to get to the finish line by taking out creatures and utilising the card draw to keep playing instants and sorceries rather than going to your opponent’s face. A definite Mythic Rare and a good planeswalker on the whole.

Thousand-Year Storm
There is one simple reason that Thousand-Year Storm is a Mythic Rare: it simulates Storm. If Storm wasn’t such a broken mechanic then this could easily be a Rare and actually of Thousand-Year Storm cost one or two more mana it could even be a Rare then as well. It’s not a broken card but has the potential to be very powerful and will need to be dealt with before it gets out of hand. Six mana is a lot but it’s still in the realm that make players want to try it out and see how good it actually can be, I don’t like that this is a Mythic Rare but I don’t think I can argue that fact as Storm shouldn’t ever be a thing ever again and this is probably the closest you could get.

Trostani Discordant
I don’t think Trostani Discordant needed to be a Mythic Rare, I think it’s only that rarity for flavour reasons. Five mana for essentially 5 power is fine, it’s on curve, but I think on a five mana creature this is more of a Rare effect. On the whole, Trostani Discordant just isn't very exciting which is a pretty key point for a Mythic Rare.

Underrealm Lich
Mainly because of the card selection ability, Underrealm Lich hits the Mythic Rare status for me. There is a lot of value on this creature but the card selection takes the biscuit, if Underrealm Lich survives until your next draw step then it’s already paid for itself and the body and Indestructible ability aren’t nothing. This is everything you want a Mythic Rare to be: big, splashy, powerful, scary and ultimately, hard to deal with.

Vraska, Golgari Queen
So much value! Vraska is a cheap planeswalker but one that gives you so much and lets you get to the late game thanks to her first ability, couple it with creatures or permanents that want to be sacrificed and the value gets better. Her second ability can protect herself in the early game but as the game goes on and creatures get bigger and cost more this ability gets worse. Lastly, in typical Vraska fashion, you get an emblem that forces some poor blocks from your opponent, they can never let anything through ever again. Another slam dunk Mythic Rare: splashy, power and needs to be dealt with, and thanks to the low mana cost I think she will be terrorising table for months to come.
